『광막한 사르가소 바다』는 진 리스가 샬롯 브론테의 『제인 에어』에서 영감을 받아 쓴 소설이다. 『제인 에어』에서 버사 메이슨은 로체스터의 첫 번째 부인으로, 그의 인생을 망치고 제인 에어와의 사랑을 방해하는 추악한 광녀로 등장한다. 광기의 이유는 가계에 흐르는 나쁜 피로 설명되며, 웃음소리와 으르렁거림으로 기괴한 모습을 보이다 종국에는 손필드 저택에 불을 지르고 죽음을 맞는다. 진 리스는 『제인 에어』를 읽고 크리올 여성인 버사 메이슨이 ‘흰옷을 입은 하이에나’ 혹은 ‘네발로 기어다니는’ 인간 이하의 동물로 그려진 데 분노했고, 단 한 번의 인간적인 목소리도 허락되지 않았던 그녀에게 생명을 주기로 결심한다. 『광막한 사르가소 바다』는 버사 메이슨을 아름다운 앙투아네트로 재탄생시켜 그녀의 파란만장한 삶을 조명하며, 그녀를 파멸시킨 남성중심주의 사회와 제국주의의 폭력을 날카롭게 드러낸다.
