『한밤이여, 안녕』은 1930년대 파리를 배경으로 술에 의지한 채 외롭게 살아가는 여성 사샤의 삶을 그린다. 남편과 연인들에게 버림받고 허름한 호텔로 흘러들어온 마흔 살 여인 사샤, 세상의 냉대와 가난에 지친 그녀의 바람은 오직 술에 취해 세상을 떠나는 것뿐이다. 그런 사샤를 부유한 여인으로 착각한 청년 르네가 그녀에게 접근하며 함께 밤을 보내길 청하지만, 남자를 불신하는 사샤는 르네에게 그간 받아온 모욕을 분풀이하려 한다.
