이 책의 저자 린다 수 박은 미국에서 태어난 한국계 미국인이지만
한국에 대해서 거의 모르고 자랐다고 한다.
결혼을 하고 아이들을 키우면서 자신이 한국에 대해 들려
줄 능력이 없다는 것을 깨닫게 되어 한국의 역사와 문화에 대한
책을 많이 읽게 되었고 이러한 경험이 책을 쓰는데 작가에게는 커다란 밑바탕이 된 것이다.

이 책은 『A single shard』를 번역한 것으로 고려 시대 어느 도자기 마을의 목이라는 소년의 이야기다.
소년이 원하는 꿈을 이루기 위한 용기와 희망의 목소리가 담겨 있다.
목이와 과거의 기억 속에 빠져 보는 것도 좋을 듯 하다.

린다 수 박(Linda Sue Park) 은 2002년 1월에 『사금파리 한 조각(A single shard)』로
18세기 영국인 존 뉴베리(John Newbery)이름을 따서 제정된
뉴베리상(The Newbery edal) 을 수상했다.
세계적 권위의 문학상인 만큼 미국의 모든 도서관에 한국 문화가
