레싱의 눈으로 모자이크 된 런던 레싱은 페르시아(지금의 이란)에서 태어나 영국의 식민지였던
아프리카의 로디지아(지금의 짐바브웨)에서 성장했다.
1939년 공무원이던 프랭크 위즈덤과 결혼하는데 안락한
가정생활이 맞지 않다고 느껴 이혼한 후 지방 신문에 단편과 시들을 발표하기 시작한다.
이후 1945년 동료 마르크시스트이던 고트프리드 안톤 레싱과 결혼하지만 역시 이혼하고,
1949년 두 번째 결혼으로 낳은 아들을 데리고 영국 런던으로 떠나게 된다.
몇 년이 지난 1957년 어느 글에서 그녀는 이렇게 썼다.
