『아킬레우스의 노래』는 미국 작가 매들린 밀러의 첫 소설로, 호메로스의 『일리아스』에 등장하는 파트로클로스를 화자로 하여 영웅 아킬레우스와의 사랑과 그들이 참전한 트로이아 전쟁을 섬세하게 그려낸 작품이다. 작가는 브라운대학교에서 고전학 학사·석사학위를 받고 예일연극영화대학원에서 고전을 현대적으로 각색하는 수업을 받았다. 그녀가 10년의 집필 기간을 거쳐 그리스 로마 신화와 로맨스를 결합한 이 작품은 과연 “근래 호메로스의 작품을 각색한 소설 중 최고”라는 찬사를 받았다.

이 책은 그리스 로마 신화를 배경으로 하는 소설로서는 이례적일 만큼 대중적으로 큰 인기를 얻으며 출간 당시 뉴욕 타임스 베스트셀러에 올랐다. 무엇보다 멜로드라마의 요소가 담긴 것이 뜨거운 호평과 인기의 이유로 꼽히는데, 열광적인 팬덤에 의해 오늘날까지 SNS에서 활발하게 회자될 정도로 그 인기가 이어져오고 있다.

동시에 작품성도 크게 인정받아 2012년에는 영국에서 가장 유수한 문학상 중 하나인 ‘여성 문학상(Women’s Prize for Fiction, 당시 오랜지상, 2014~2017년 베일리스 여성 문학상)’을 수상했다. 여성 문학상은 한 해 동안 영국에서 영어로 출판된 여성 작가의 장편소설을 대상으로 수여하는 상으로, 1996년에 제정되었는데, 앤 패칫, 라이오넬 슈라이버, 치마만다 응고지 아디치에, 바버라 킹솔버, 알리 스미스 등의 걸출한 작가들이 수상한 바 있다. 『아킬레우스의 노래』가 이 상을 받은 것은 당시 심사위원장이 스스로 고백하듯 “여러 면에서 다소 놀라운” 일이었는데, 신인작가의 데뷔작이자 대중적인, 조금은 통속적인 면도 함께 지닌 소설이 앤 엔라이트, 앤 패칫, 신시아 오지크 등의 쟁쟁한 작가들의 작품과 경쟁하여 거둔 뜻밖의 수상이었기 때문이다. 현재 『아킬레우스의 노래』는 세계 약 25개 언어로 번역되어 있으며, 2017년 9월에는 영국 블룸스버리 출판사가 현대의 고전 중에서도 특히 사랑받는 책들을 모아 만든 ‘블룸스버리 모던 클래식’ 시리즈 10종에도 포함되었다.
