예수와 본디오 빌라도에 관한 작품을 썼다가 문단의 혹평을 받고
크게 좌절한 후, 사랑하는 연인을 떠나 정신병원에 자신을 유폐했다.
그의 연인인 '마르가리타'는 거장과의 재회를 꿈꾸지만,
이들에게 손을 뻗는 볼란드 일당은 마르가리타에게 제안을 하는데….

당시의 문학적인 검열을 풍자하는 것은 물론이고,
선악에 대한 관념부터 소설 곳곳에 나타나는
비밀경찰국에 관한 이야기, 빌라도의 얘기와 소설 속에서
펼쳐지는 현재 이야기들의 상호 텍스트성은 이 작품이 왜 걸작인지를 말해준다.
소설 속 거장이 불태워야만 했던 원고처럼, 작가 역시 순탄치 않은
인생을 살았음을 이 소설은 말해주고 있다. 결국 미하일 불가코프는
사후 삼십여 년이 지나서야 출간된 이 책 『거장과 마르가리타 』로
20세기 러시아에서 가장 뛰어난 작가라는 영예를 얻는다.
